UNDERSTANDING WATCH KEY TERMS

NTRODUCTION TO WATCH TERMS

Time is our most precious resource, and an accurate timepiece is indispensable for budgeting it. Therefore, it is crucial to understand the basic components of a watch, so you can understand how to select the best timepiece for your needs. The most essential part of a watch is its movement, also known as the caliber. This is the inner mechanical workings of a watch, responsible for moving the hands about the face and properly keeping time. It can be purely mechanical, as in manual and automatic movements, or powered by a battery as in quartz movements. Whichever style you prefer, find a vast array of designer watches at Azzi Jewelers.

POPULAR WATCH TERMS TO KNOW

The outermost body of the watch that protects the movement is the case or casing, and it often features a removable back to allow access for repair and maintenance. Atop or aside the case rests the crown, a small knob that is used to wind the watch in hand-wound models, or adjusts the time in others. The clock face, or dial, contains the hands and numerals that display the current time. This is protected by the crystal, a dome of clear glass, acrylic, or synthetic sapphire, which is held firmly in place by a bezel, crafted of metal or ceramic.

A watch is far more than these most basic pieces. Many watchmakers include complications to their timepieces. A complication is any additional function or feature beyond simple timekeeping. The chronograph, or stopwatch function is one of the most well-known additions. Another popular complication includes the skeleton face, which leaves the face of the watch transparent to display the movement. Others include additional timescales, such as moon phase indicators and calendars, as well as a rotating bezel that displays time in an easy-to-read display, which is most often used for diving watches, when precision timekeeping is a matter of life-and-death.
